Shrewsbury Get-Together Saturday Oct 25th
There will be a get together in Shrewsbury on Saturday
Oct 25th. The plan is to meet at the Shrewsbury Sport Village
at 11am - See link for a description of the track and facilities http://www.shrewsbury.gov.uk/public/sport/facilities/shrewsburysportsvillage/.
We will have an early lunch and get ready to start at 12.
I have booked the track for 2 hours from 12 noon and the
session on the track will be based on team work. It will NOT
be like the interval based training sessions we've had at Stoke
Mandeville! Following this, there will be 24km bike ride in
the countryside to the East of Shrewsbury. Andy Clanahan has
organised this and the route can be seen by going to this link: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/206172 The
cost of hiring the track will be met by the association.
Afterwards, we can go and have an early evening meal for those
who are in no rush to head off home.
PLEASE let me know if you plan to join in.

August 16 and 17th - IHPV World championships at Bentwaters
Parks, near Woodbridge, in Suffolk. Woodbridge is just north
of Ipswich.
The IHPV World championships are being held over
the weekend of August 16 & 17th at Bentwaters Parks, an ex-airfield,
near to the town of Woodbridge, in Suffolk and it is being organised
by the BHPC. I've been told it has an extremely good surface
for racing. There will be much going on over the weekend and
there should be some good racing so lets get as many handcyclists
along as possible. Racing will start on Friday evening, August
15th.
Full details about the championship are available on the
website http://www.wc2008.org.uk/ and registration instructions
can be found there.
Race program:
Sat am - Flying 200m & 1k
drags - On main runway, about 1.3 mile long Sat pm - Three
Hour Race - Course about 4 miles. Sun am - One Hour Time-Trial
- Fast flat course about 2 miles. Sun pm - Criteriums - A short,
1.3-mile course.
200m sprints run from Friday evening to Sunday
morning, in the early morning and evening when wind conditions
are usually best. For IHPVA 'legal' record speeds, the
wind speed in any direction must not exceed 6 (six) kilometers
per hour (1.67 meters per second) .
Touring Rides
There will
also be a number of tour rides starting on Friday afternoon,
August 15th.
Accommodation
I've checked about wheelchair
accessible accommodation in the area and found the following
around Ipswich; 2 Travel Lodges, 3 Travel Inns and 3 Express
by Holiday Inns - most of these places are on the A14 south
of Ipswich so there is no one place really close to the
race course.
Who's going?
Check
on the Yahoo Handcycling group to see who's going.

The event is aimed at introducing individuals to training, showing them waht to do for the winter so they may
compete next year. Coaching will be informal, and aimed at technique and base skill level, but the 2

I am trying to recruit helpers to come over, coach based, so who have experience with triathlon, and
who can guide them as well

Transfer of governance of Cycling for persons with a
disability
Aigle, Switzerland – Today, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC)
President Sir Philip Craven and International Cycling Union (UCI) President
Pat McQuaid have signed an agreement for the transfer of governance of Cycling for persons with a
disability from IPC to UCI. The signing ceremony took place
at
the UCI Headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland.
“Over the past few years, IPC Cycling has developed significantly. This transfer of governance will
help the sport of Para-Cycling to further develop and the true partnership with the UCI will be of
benefit to all cyclists with a disability and the Paralympic Movement,” commented IPC President Sir
Philip Craven.
The first step to an enhanced development of Cycling for riders with a disability was made in July
2002, when IPC and UCI signed an agreement of co- operation for successful collaboration in the
IPC sport of Cycling. Following several years of close collaboration between IPC and UCI, the UCI
Management Committee in 2005 formally indicated their interest in pursuing the governance and
management authority role over Cycling for riders with a disability.
In September 2006 at the Sport Forum of IPC Cycling, a majority of the members attending voted for
a motion submitted by the IPC Cycling Technical Committee to approve the transfer of governance
of IPC Cycling from IPC to UCI. The IPC Governing Board ratified the recommendation at its meeting
in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in November 2006.
Said Pat McQuaid, President of the UCI: “The agreement for the transfer of governance of Para-
Cycling from IPC to UCI crowns, I am pleased to say, several years of partnership between the UCI
and IPC. The UCI is pleased to integrate Para-Cycling in its structures. From now on, the UCI will
play the same role for this specialty as it does for all the other Cycling disciplines. It is one of the
first International Federations to govern and develop a sport both for able-bodied athletes as well as
athletes with a disability. The UCI wishes a warm welcome to all Para-Cyclists and looks forward to
organizing the next
UCI
Para-Cycling World Championships.”
The UCI and the IPC will collaborate with their respective membership to ensure the mainstreaming
of Para-Cycling programmes into the national and international competition and athlete development
programmes.
Notes to the Editor:
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic
Movement. The IPC organizes the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, and serves as the
International Federation for 11 sports, for which
it supervises and co-ordinates the World Championships and other competitions. The IPC is
committed to enabling Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and to developing sport
opportunities for all persons with a disability from the beginner to elite level. In addition, the IPC
aims to promote the Paralympic values, which include courage, determination, inspiration and
equality.
The International Cycling Union (UCI), founded in 1900, is the association
of National Cycling Federations. In close co-operation with these bodies, it governs, manages and
develops Cycling in all its form, with the greatest respect of the fundamental principles of equality,
universality and integration.
