Handcycling session at Stoke Mandeville on May 30th (listed 12/5/09)
We have changed the next date of training at Stoke Mandeville from June 6th to May 30th due to a
conflict with the date of the 1st race of of British Cycling Disability race series which is on June 7th
at Salt Ayre, Lancaster.
So the training day on June 6th at Stoke Mandeville is CANCELLED. For those who are planning
to take part in the Tour de Vale ride on June 7th, I have kept the rooms reserved at the lodge and
will send out a separate message about this.
So, on May 30th, there will be a track session in the morning and a road ride in the afternoon.
Lunch will be held at 1pm. The morning session is also open to anyone wanting to try handcycling
for the 1st time. Please remember to bring your isotonic drinks and energy bars/snacks for
carbohydrate intake.
Paul Smith and his colleagues at Greenwich University need to complete a reseach study by the
end of June and so the morning track session is going to be used to carry out the study. For the
study, Paul requires 10 volunteers, male and spinal cord injured, to undertake a 1 hour time trial.
Handcyclists with other disabilities are welcome to take part as well. Full details of the study are
given below.
You are required to arrive at the track for 9.30am
For the afternoon, a group ride has been planned.
Please contact me (Matt Lindley) and Paul Smith to confirm
your attendance. Please confirm if you want lunch - cost of lunch is £4.
Unfortunately there is no accommodation available for this weekend. A junior European basketball championship is being held at Stoke Mandeville on this weekend and all the rooms have been
booked already. Sorry about this.
I hope you can come along for the day and support Paul in his research project

isotonic drinks and energy bars/bananas for carbohydrate intake during
the training. A new requirement for the training sessions is to
have your race bar fitted to your bike. This is a safety requirement.
During the lunch break, the committee will be holding a members forum
which will be an opportunity for any issues to be discussed.
